I have been involved in Chin Community of Ohio since 2018 as an adviser. Since Chin Community of Ohio Inc opened Chin Community Center in Columbus, Ohio, I volunteered to Chin Community Center as Office Staff Coordinator. As we ethnic Chin, most of us, are lack of English language skill, each family in the community struggle in our daily live. We help to read and translate common mails, apply for public benefits, advocate in legal and other issues, schedule medical appointments etc. Come and join us in our team, we always welcome volunteers. Your time and commitment will really impact our community. As our theme is “Not to be served, but to serve” we show our love to others by helping them in their needs.
Ethnic Chin, who are mainly Christian, is one of the eight major ethnic groups in Burma. Since Burma got independence from United Kingdom, all the governments systematically abuse basic human rights in Burma. After the military’s second coup in 1988, ethnic Chin people started running away from Burma and lived in the neighbor countries, India, Thailand, and Malaysia as refugee to escape from being persecuted. About in 2009, Refugee from Burma started resettling in Columbus, Ohio. There are over 2000 Burmese Refugee population in Columbus, Ohio and ethnic Chin are 99% of the population. Emmanuel Chin Baptist Church pastors and Chin community volunteer leaders started form Chin Community Services in 2015.
